Elopement, plus two hours

A Friday wedding at the Manhattan Marriage Bureau, a walk north through Tribeca and SoHo, the subway uptown and dinner for 24 in a West Village restaurant.

Lena and Marco live in Brooklyn and didn’t want a venue. They wanted the city they live in and a dinner with the 22 people they would call at 2 am.

The Marriage Bureau

The Manhattan Marriage Bureau works by appointment, and theirs was at 1:15 on a Friday. We waited 40 minutes on a bench in the hallway, which is normal, and the ceremony itself took about four. Their friends were waiting on the steps outside with petals.

The walk

We spent an hour walking north through Tribeca and SoHo in the low March light, then took the 1 train to Christopher Street. Lena asked for a photo on the subway because they met on the L train in 2019.

Dinner

Dinner was at one long table in the back room of a small Italian restaurant on Bedford Street. Marco’s brother gave the toast. When we left at 9 it had been raining and the sidewalk was shining under the awning.

We booked five hours and it covered everything from the bench at the Marriage Bureau to the rain on Bedford Street. Marco’s brother has already asked for Nell’s number.
