The Wedding Day, plus one hour
An August wedding for 180 guests in a timber barn in Germantown, with a ceremony in the hayfield, a change into coral aso-oke and a money spray that lasted most of an hour.
Ruth grew up twenty minutes from the farm, and Ade’s family drove up from Houston and Maryland. With 180 guests, two large families and an outfit change, we added a ninth hour, and Sam stayed for all of it.
The ceremony
Ruth got ready in the farmhouse with her best friend, Hana, who did up her necklace and then her shoes. The ceremony was at 5 in the hayfield next to the barn. Ade cried during Ruth’s vows, and that photo is the one his mother framed.
The reception
After dinner the couple changed into coral and gold aso-oke that Ade’s mother had made in Lagos, and the family danced them back in. The money spray went on for most of an hour. Sam stood on a hay wagon for the wide photos while I stayed inside the circle.
The barn has no air conditioning, and it was 84 degrees at sunset. If you are getting married in a barn in August, give your guests fans and give yourself a spare shirt.

Sam and Nell were in two places at once all night. We have photos of both our mothers dancing at the same moment on opposite sides of the barn.
