The Wedding Day
A January wedding at an 18th-century fieldstone house outside Hudson. It snowed from noon until midnight, the ceremony was in front of the fireplace and dinner was by candlelight.
Sofia and Ellis chose January on purpose: lower venue prices, no competition for the date and a real chance of snow. It started at noon and didn’t stop until after midnight.
Portraits before the ceremony
Winter light is short. Sunset in Hudson on January 24 was at 5:03, so we did the portraits at 2:30, before the ceremony, while daylight was still coming through the snow. They saw each other for the first time under the trees in front of the house, and Ellis spent most of it brushing snow off Sofia’s cape.
Candlelight
The ceremony was at 4 in the long room, with 58 guests on borrowed chairs facing the fireplace. Everything after that was lit by candles and the fire. For winter weddings I carry a second camera with a fast lens for exactly this, and I don’t use flash during dinner.
They left at 11 in Ellis’s father’s old green car, with most of the wedding waving from the porch.

We picked January for the snow and got eleven hours of it. Nell told us at our first call to do portraits before the ceremony, and she was right.
